The salary is very competitive. With a master's degree you make around $50,000 per year (including retirement) and the cost of living in Tunisia is among the lowest in the world. The housing is excellent. There is a brand new elementary school building opening up in winter 2017. It is an excellent facility which was mostly paid for by the largest grant ever given to an overseas school by the United States Government. The grant was given because the other elementary school building was burned down by protesters during the Tunisian revolution. There were some terrorist attacks in Tunisia, but according to statistics Tunisia is a very safe place to live. I have knows people who were victims of theft , but I do not know anyone who has been personally mugged or accosted. I have never been mistreated for being American. Tunisia is safe, and the greatest threat is road safety. Air is very clean and living on the Mediterranean has its benefits. It is quite beautiful, there is excellent locally grown produce and we are a short flight from Europe. There is a large educated, largely French and Arabic speaking population in Tunis. The academic level of the students at the school is probably lower than at other US State Department affiliated schools. The students are generally respectful. I believe there are 40 nationalities represented, but the demographic is starting to skew towards English language learners and those who have not previously been in international schools. With the excellent lifestyle and package that ACST affords they have been able to hire excellent teachers and administrators. The atmosphere at the school is very good and colleagues are helpful and motivated. Teachers do a lot of professional development (mostly in Europe) throughout the school year. People work very hard but don't see the atmosphere as high pressure or competitive.
