There is a huge potential for saving if you don’t travel often as well as don’t do much on the weekends. The cost of living in the city of Antofagasta is very high (it’s the most expensive city in Chile), but you can still save well depending on your lifestyle. The city can be dangerous, so you need to be with a friend at all times. The school provides housing right on the beach with a beautiful view of the ocean. The school’s housing is just a bus ride away from shopping. The commute to work from the apartments is just a short ten minute walk along the beach, but keep in mind that you will have a roommate. Some of my colleagues had horrible experiences with the roommates the school chose for them. The school administration is only concerned about money and I have witnessed them hiring teachers because they are desperate for a foreign teacher in a particular subject area, even after they contacted that teacher’s references and the references did not have any positive things to say. They then fired the teacher a semester after they arrived, once AIS has found a better match. This school is strictly a business and does not care about their students or their staff, many of the teachers there end up leaving in the middle of the night because they are so unhappy. Besides the beautiful ocean view from the apartments, I cannot find one positive thing to say about this school.
